With the rapid development of the construction of the Greater Bay Area and the proposal of the concept of the 100km Golden Inner Bay around the Pearl River Estuary, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Port Group is faced with new opportunities and new development. In recent years, Guangdong has completed the construction of large-scale professional terminals with international advanced levels, such as Nansha Port Phase III Project of Guangzhou Port, Shenzhen Port Yatian Port Container Terminal Project, etc. Guangzhou Port deep water Channel widening project and Zhuhai Port Gaolan area main Channel project have been completed. Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan and other four ports have entered the ranks of the 100 million tons of ports. The container throughput of Shenzhen Port and Guangzhou Port ranks the fourth and fifth in the world respectively. The international container liner routes of the Greater Bay Area Port Group basically cover major trading ports around the world.

According to statistics, by the end of 2021, the navigable mileage of inland waterways in the province is 12,000 kilometers, ranking the second in China, among which there are 1,402 kilometers of high-grade inland waterways and 6 megaton ports, namely Guangzhou port, Shenzhen Port, Zhanjiang Port, Dongguan port, Zhuhai Port and Jiangmen Port. The existing ports have 2,079 berths, including 349 10,000-ton berths.

New breakthroughs were made in the construction of ports and shipping services, including 45 10,000-ton berths, a cargo throughput of 280 million tons and 8.54 million TEus of containers. The 3,000-ton Xijiang Waterway was completed, the 1,000-ton Beijiang waterway was expanded and upgraded, and 505 kilometers of inland waterways were added, enabling 3,000-ton ships to sail directly from the Greater Bay Area to Guangxi. The 1,000-ton ship reached Shaoguan City via the Beijiang River.

According to the Port Layout Plan of Guangdong Province recently issued by the General Office of the Guangdong Provincial Government, Guangdong Province should build a nuclear bipolar development pattern with the Pearl River Delta port cluster as the core and the east and northwest Guangdong port cluster as the development poles. The strategic positioning and development orientation of the two international hub seaports of Guangzhou and Shenzhen should be deepened, and Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou, Zhanjiang, Foshan, Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, Guangdong Province, Guangdong Province and Guangdong Province should be determined. The multi-level port development pattern of Qingyuan as the main port and other regional important ports promotes the dislocation development of ports, division of labor and cooperation, and complementary advantages.

By 2025, Guangzhou Port and Shenzhen port will have strong integrated international shipping service functions, and basically become world-class ports. The international competitiveness of Pearl River Delta ports will be significantly improved. In addition, Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong-Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area will basically become world-class port clusters. Major progress was made in building specialized public port areas.

By 2035, Guangzhou Port, Shenzhen Port, Zhuhai Port, Shantou Port and Zhanjiang Port will be fully built into world-class ports, while Zhuhai Port, Shantou Port and Zhanjiang Port will all reach world-class level, comprehensively improve the level of intensive, large-scale and professional development of inland ports, and build the whole province into a world-class port cluster that is safe, efficient, smart and green, supported, innovative and open, and internationally advanced.
